Can you determine which of the following text messages is legit?
- Hey, how are you?
- Haven’t heard from you in a long time, let’s get together!
- Are you available for lunch?
- I’d love to get lunch scheduled soon and hear your stories and learn from you.
- Sorry I missed you yesterday!
When I received it I was ready to report it as spam.
Why?
Because the sender failed to say who he was, my only conclusion was that it was spam!
Right as I was about to click the “delete, block, and report another one showed up that allowed me to see it was legit.
Let’s face it, to a big degree tech has made us lazy, unassuming and in some cases totally lacking important critical thinking skills.
Gen Zs are generally the worst inheritors of this, because many simply didn’t learn anything other than what came across their screens. I have even called out my son for text laziness.

“Don’t assume someone (a prospect) will have your name in their phone.” I would tell him.
We all have a spam problem and unwanted text messages from some random player across the sea.
Next time you, or someone in your organization “assumes” that the recipient “knows who you are.” Be reminded of this critical piece of advice:
Check before it is sent because adding your name is not that difficult and it goes a long way in demonstrating professionalism.
By the way, the correct one is #4.
